The 12 Bar Blues


2 Guitarsists walk into a room. One of them says let’s play something, so what’s the first thing they play? Most likely the Blues. This guide will look at steps to be able to play the blues. First let’s take a look at The 12 Bar Blues Progression. The 12 Bar Blues has three dominant 7 chords - I7 IV7 & V7

Notice how the chords are written in roman numerals? This number is the numeral or scale degree in relation to the major scale. By writing chords in this way we can start thinking of chords (and notes) in relation to its’ key signature known as major scale chord harmony.

A key refers to a collection of 7 notes that constitute a major scale. These notes are the building blocks of chords and construct 7 chords in a key.
